Seasons & Climate

The seasons in Kashmir.

Spring
The spring season of March and April is one of the most beautiful around the Vale of Kashmir and among the hills, with the blooming of meadow flowers, iris and news leaves and the trees laden with blossom. The nights however will be cold, as will most of the days, and cold winds blow frequently. In May and June the weather is more settled and this of one of the best times to visit Kashmir.

Sumer
After June and to the end of August it can be disconcertingly hot. Mosquitoes are whining around and the center of the lake seems the only way to keep comparatively cool and perhaps escape being bitten. The end of August sees the Vale very full indeed. Indian tourists come in their droves. Houseboats are crowded, the lake water are churned up with water skiing. The shops will be full and the Kashmir traders, it is like an extended harvest festival.
The monsoon breaks in July and August but the Vale of Kashmir is protected from all but the fiercest rains by the Pit Panjal range of the mountains. There are .however, frequent thunder storms, but they pass quickly and in so doing bring drama to scenery and produce fantastic sunsets.

Autumn
There is autumn season, by October, the leaves on the chenar trees will be starting to turn fold and the fantastic red that seems to set fire to the surrounding hills and Mughal Gardens.The saffron plants do not bloom until November so that few visitors are around to see this glorious sight.

Winter
The winter set in from late November when snow fall will cover the Valley and the southern areas around Jammu with deep layer of snow that will last until the first thaws the following February.

Recommended Clothing
Beside your personal clothing the below mentioned items are highly recommended
Spring - medium weight woolen and warm top coat light gloves and light hat.
Summer – Light cottons, light woolens and a raincoat.
Autumn – Light woolens and a raincoat or jacket, light gloves and light hat.
Winter – heavy woolens and q thick overcoat, gloves and woolen hat and snow shoes

Climate
For the area in and around the Kashmir, which is the most frequented region visited by tourists, this list of expected temperatures will be a guide to enable sensible an appropriate planning for a visit. It will be seen that there is ,for instance, a good mean temperature for summer weather and ,alternatively, a clod time when winter skiing can be enjoyed.
These temperatures are the average taken over the moth. There is a caution inherent, in that even on the hottest days, between June and September, the nights can turn chilly. Not all nights do turn cold; some expected in so mountainous a region
