During the tourist season there are many daily flights direct from New Delhi and Mumbai. There are also flights which go from New Delhi via Amritsar and Jammu or via Chandigarh. During the peak tourist season from Mid April to ending August the air fares can be astronomical. In order to get cheaper ticket one must plan the trip 6 months before and book the tickets first thing as early as possible. On arrival at Srinagar and going though the formalities the journey into the centre of the city will take about 45 minutes by taxi. On the day of departure one must arrive 2 hours before in order to go though three tire security check before showing at booking counter. You are advised to carry as little as possible as hand baggage to go quickly through the security check

By Road
After arriving at Jammu one either takes a bus, hires a car or shares a taxi agreeing the price beforehand. The drive on to Srinagar will take about eight hours depending on the road condition; it could take twelve hours. The scenery is superb though the Banihal tunnel. Another option is to disembark the train at Udumpur and take a taxi to Banihal and board train again up to Srinagar Railway station. From here one can take a cab city center. There is a rail service direct from Calcutta and Mumbai. Not all carriages are equipped with air-conditioning and the long journey in summer time can be hot and tedious, even in the first class ordinary non air-conditioned.

Srinagar is 880 km from New Delhi and there is roughly four main train service daily. The journey takes over 13 hours and some of this time will be spent overnight. There are Tourist Reception Office at all the main line railway stations that will render any assistance needed. Trains operating up to Jammu have interesting name such as the Jammu Mail ,DN super Fast, Sealdah Express, the Shalimar Express. One should try and book on a train that arrives Jammu by mid day the nest day, thus allowing plenty of time to make further arrangements to go straight up to Srinagar or to stay for a while at Jammu
